ASCO - UK Apprenticeship Scheme

The ASCO apprenticeship scheme provides individuals with the opportunity to gain work experience in warehousing and logistics operations within the Oil and Gas Industry, while working towards formal qualifications.

Spanning a four year period, the apprenticeship scheme involves working across all our operational sites in Aberdeen and Peterhead, whilst working towards a formal qualification – N/SVQ Level 2 in Warehousing and Distribution.

The N/SVQ is based on UK national industry standards which recognise that candidates have demonstrated their ability to reach the standard, have the skill and associated knowledge to work safely and competently at the appropriate level in their chosen area.  The N/SVQ will consist of three mandatory assessment routes plus five optional assessment routes.

Upon completion of the N/SVQ (approx 18/24 months) apprentices are offered the opportunity to attend the local college on a day release basis,  to complete the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) or another business related National Certificate qualification – leading to the full Modern Apprenticeship Qualification as recognised by SQA.

But don’t just take our word for it, James Andrew is currently on the Apprenticeship scheme at ASCO and here’s what he has to say:

James-Andrew McNab, 19, from Fraserburgh is one of six apprentices working in ASCO’s Northern North Sea operation, he describes why he was attracted to the scheme and what it entails on a day to day basis:

“I left school after sixth year and was working as a trainee accountant but I soon realised that wasn’t the career path that I wanted to follow.  I needed to do something more `hands on’.  I had joined retailers, Argos in their warehouse department when I saw the advert for the apprenticeship at ASCO, which appealed to me.  There were 15 interviewed so I was delighted to be successful”

What does the Apprenticeship entail?

“Basically you experience almost every department in the company starting with warehousing and stores then operations and finally going into the office based functions such as People Solutions (HR).   I spent a longer period in Stores due to a lack of personnel but that was the department that I have enjoyed the most so far because of the variety of work – every day is different.”

What next?

In August, James-Andrew will start attending Fraserburgh College on a day release basis to work towards an HNC in Business Studies which will lead towards the full Modern Apprenticeship Qualification.

We all hope that James-Andrew will use his skills and experience to stay with ASCO a long time.
