Waste is an issue which affects every industry. Legislation in this area is constantly evolving which means safe and efficient management and reduction of waste materials are increasingly important.

Integrated Waste Management

Creating value for you

We are the only service provider in the UKCS able to deliver an integrated shorebase, tank cleaning, bulk disposals and waste offering. There is significant value in this integration including cost savings, operational efficiency, transparency, accountability and administration.

We have a range of waste solutions, developed to help you comply with legislation, minimise waste sent to landfill and reduce costs. We have specialist expertise, particularly within the oil and gas sector, helping you to minimise the environmental impact of your operations, allowing you to focus on your core business. With the capability to handle all types of hazardous and non-hazardous materials, we work with you through the full project life cycle, from exploration to decommissioning.

Technology in Action

WaMS, our waste management module is industry-leading, providing full traceability of waste material through to recycling or disposal. The system ensures full compliance with all regulatory requirements and helps you in your drive towards zero waste to landfill.

Tank Cleaning

Tank cleaning direct at the quayside

We provide industry leading industrial services including marine vessel tank cleaning for some of the UK's biggest oil and gas operations and contractors.

Our fleet of high-specification vacuum tankers and teams of highly skilled personnel bring unrivalled experience to vessel tank cleaning operations. Our teams are able to provide a full in-house operation including scaffolding and cleaning to the highest of standards - safely and timeously. The ability to provide direct discharge to our quayside tanks increases our flexibility and eliminates the need to mobilise multiple tankers, giving you cost savings and less risk of HSSEQ issues.

Bulk Waste Disposal

Quayside bulk disposal

We provide bulk waste disposal services for both hazardous and non-hazardous materials. Our turnkey approach to providing bulk transportation and waste disposal services provides liability protection, and our wide variety of logistics options, supported by our system of bulk waste disposal and management facilities, is unrivalled. The ability to discharge directly to the quayside increases flexibility and enables you to make use of our waste storage facilities at our shorebase locations.

We provide an assortment of recycling, treatment and disposal options for hazardous and non-hazardous liquids, solids, drill cuttings and slops. Additionally, we have numerous transportation methods to move your bulk waste to one of our waste transfer stations.

24/7 NORM solutions for you

NORM Solutions is a joint venture between ASCO and John Lawrie Group, specialising in the receipt and decontamination of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM). We operate from a purpose built, state-of-the-art facility in Aberdeen which is capable of handling all types of NORM contaminated equipment, solids, sludges and liquids produced by the UK oil and gas industry.

By using Ultra High Pressure jetting equipment, our automated systems are able to decontaminate items that would normally require the use of chemicals or additional abrasives, both of which result in higher disposal and transportation costs.

Let us handle the break up

ASCO has been servicing high profile decommissioning projects since 2009. We handle the onshore disposal of above sea structures, below sea structures and fluids. We have extensive knowledge of oil and gas waste streams and years of experience in dealing with their onshore disposal. Common decommissioning waste streams include:

  • Hazardous wastes and mercury
  • Hydrocarbons and bulk fluids
  • Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM)
  • Scrap metals
  • Recyclables

Decommissioning projects can be handled through our quayside facilities in Peterhead, Aberdeen and Great Yarmouth or at almost any other port in the UK through our approved partners.

Training and Compliance

Keeping you compliant

Our team is certified to deliver the Chartered Institute of Waste Management (CIWM) Waste Smart courses which keep you up to date with current legislation and best practice in a rapidly changing industry. Our in-house trainers can deliver these courses both onshore and offshore.

Our team can also carry out onshore and offshore waste audits which are designed to improve compliance significantly and have aided the recertification of ISO14001 for many of our customers. The audits identify areas for improvement, areas of non-compliance with relevant regulations and areas where continuous improvement initiatives could be introduced. It is recommended that audits are carried out on a regular basis to ensure compliance and regulatory requirements are met.

Waste Innovation

Waste to Energy

ASCO is currently working towards the trial of a new design waste to energy unit for deployment on our quayside facilities. Utilising a number of new processing techniques, a blend of waste undergoes thermal decomposition. The heat produced by this process is used to generate electricity, and it is envisaged that at full throughput, the ASCO system will generate up to 1.5MW of power which can be used to power the quayside facility and, depending on location, be used to supply power directly to berthed vessels, negating the need for them to use their MGO powered engines whilst in port. Other than heat and gas, the only other output from the system is an inert char which accounts for only 10% of the waste input. This material is suitable for landfill, however options are being explored for the re-use of this material.

Quayside waste treatment

Working closely with a specialist chemicals manufacturer, ASCO has developed and is currently implementing an innovative low energy chemical treatment process that will be carried out at on the quayside at the point of vessel discharge. This process will reduce the cost of treating oil based mud (OBM), and will also deliver significant environmental benefits.

This is achieved by splitting the returned muds back to their constituent components and redirecting them to more cost effective and environmentally beneficial disposal routes. This dramatically reduces, and in some cases removes the volume of waste which has been historically disposed of via non-environmentally friendly methods such as landfill. ASCO has exclusivity on the chemicals and following successful completion of the trial phase, this technology is in the process of being deployed across all quayside locations.
